Google index WTF....

http://www.webdevforums.com

So here is the problem...Google is doing some really odd indexing with my site.

My company did a content rewrite so that we can target some relevant keywords. It took a while for Google to actually index it (according to the cache date) and even took days to update the cache (e.g. last cache date was Jan 23, but it just showed up today).

I check the cache date to see if Google finally got our new content, which it had, but it apparently has skipped over one of my pages. (http://thewebsquad.com/01_about.php). it is not even indexed, but has almost 100 links point to the page. However, (this is where it gets odd) Google indexed the www version of the same page, but there are no links pointing to that page.

Any insights?

The possiblity of bad code

http://www.webdevforums.com

Hi All,

I have a website up that is an ecommerce site. The programmer I used to create the site was a great coder but not the best designer. I am now working with a web designer who is adding a fresh new design to the site but I'm not convinced of his coding abilities as there have been more than several mistakes (quite a lot actually) made that I have caught in my testing.

I am not skilled in coding whatsoever and unfortunately, I don't even have a basic understanding of it so please excuse the potential stupidity of the following query. My question is this.......If everything tests okay on the test site and all the functions are working properly, does that mean that the code is good and solid OR is there such a thing as coding in a way that it holds together only temporarily? I don't really understand the concept of why coding fails in the first place. Basically I'm wanting to know the answer to this question so that I can either relax when it's finally uploaded to my site (or not relax depending on the feedback I get here).

We're getting close to completion and I'm starting to freak about the upload. I'm petrified that there might be a potential of it messing up my site in any way :eek2:.

Thanks so much in advance.

Computer keeps freezing

http://www.webdevforums.com

I am trying to help my friend with her computer. It keeps freezing at random times. It might work for 20 min or 2 days, but then it will freeze and require a hard reboot.

I have run virus scans and adware scans, removed some junk, quarantined a couple of viruses. used avira and avast. I have also used Auslogics Boostspeed to remove unused programs, remove startup programs, clean junk files, defragmented the harddrive and registry.

I have not tried reformatting because we don't have recover disks.

the computer had a new motherboard put in less than a year ago, and had the ram upgraded (2 gb).

I am out of ideas. any programs out there that will look for problems?
Thanks.

Poll: When is an acceptable time to take a site down for planned maintenance?

http://webdesign.about.com

Websites can go down at any time, and unplanned outages tend to happen at the worst possible times. But most professional Web teams try to make their planned outages as non-disruptive as possible. In fact, at many of the companies I've built websites for, even updating existing Web pages has to happen at off hours, especially if it's a major change. At one company I worked for, any change to the website that required the server to be stopped and restarted had to happen during our lowest traffic times. That was around 2am where I live. The idea was to minimize the impact. But another company I worked for has no problem taking parts of the website down for maintenance even during business hours. The overtime costs for developers working outside of business hours out-weighed the potential loss of revenue from taking the site down. What do you think? What times of the day is it okay to take a website or part of a website down for maintenance? If it depends, please explain in the comments.

1 Page, too much JQuery

http://www.webdevforums.com

Hello Everyone,

I'm so close and yet so far, I could really do with your help on this one! I have no knowledge of javascript and it's causing me a problem.

I want to combine 2 different stock javascript effects.

The first is the Horizontal Accordion
http://designreviver.com/tutorials/j...tal-accordion/

and the second is a coda slider
http://cssglobe.com/lab/easyslider1.7/01.html

But when I put both on the same page there is a small conflict. Here is the site I'm working on:

http://wibblywobblywebsite.com/help/

If you flip to the "BLOG" tab, you can see there is a "more" button. That's supposed to operate the coda slider within the blog tab. The idea here is that I can have many pages of text in just one tab, by clicking more. The problem is, just rolling over the "more" button activates the OTHER javascript effect and the accordion tab flips to the next one. Individually I have both these effects working, but putting them on the same page has broken them.

How do I separate the "more" button from activating the accordion swipe to the next tab?

I think this could be a really good design if I get it working so many thanks for any help!

which coding to learn

http://www.webdevforums.com

Hi guys. Im new here, so pardon my ignorance :)

My aim with this thread is to learn which skills i need to require in addition to what i already know in order to make a small, but professionally looking article site.

I have two sidebars, a middle "main page", on which i want the articles to be displayed. Is my assumption correct that i need to learn ASP(X?) in order to have the sitebars/header/footer/everything but the main page remain passive while the visitor browses through the articles via the sitebar. Put in other, perhaps more clear, words: I'd like to make it so only the middle div (the one showing the actual article) load as the visitors uses the article links.

Background: I know xhtml and css, can do enough with photoshop to handle the images and graphics.

Is ASP the correct language to learn in order to achieve what is described above?

Are there any specially adapted platforms for showing articles that i can implement on top of my xhtml?

THanks in advance guys :)

Help: Float is interfering with alignment properties in IE and FF, but not Sfri or GC

http://www.webdevforums.com

I've recently been coding a website to use as my portfolio/resume when I graduate from university at the end of this year.

Its working perfectly across all the browsers except for a small but important mis-alignment ocurring in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

- I have a navigation div above a header div
- Both are aligned to the center of the page using margin:0 auto auto auto;
- However they are different widths ( navigation div:960px; header div:968px; )
- They are held in a container div

The problem is that a 2px gap ocurs between the divs (vertically).
However this only happens in Firefox and Internet Explorer. Safari and Google Chrome are fine.

I have attempted to fix the problem by placing float:left; in the div attributes. This gets rid of the gap, but makes the navigation div mis-align in all browsers.

Any help or knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated.

- Kelsey-Lee :)

EDIT: I've solved it, simply removed the float whilst checking that everything in my code has a purpose and found that the gap has dissappeared without affecting anything else.

Cms

http://www.webdevforums.com

Hi, I dont know if this is the right place to post this or not, so apologies if its not.

I've got some knowledge of PHP and mySQL and am looking to further that more with a bit of a challenege, im looking at creating a website that will allow me to update pages and upload files from one central area - so basically a CMS. Im essentially, just wondering if anybody knows of any decent tutorials with how to create something similar to what i want. I'd prefer it if the tutorial was in video form, but thats not the end of the world if its not. A few tutorials that ive found aren't the best so i figured i'd try a forum to see if anybody knows of anything thats available on the net.

if anyone could point me in the right direction of one, that'd be great.

Thanks!
